About the Big Bear Bronco Bash In July of 2001 a group of Early Bronco enthusiasts in Southern California formed So Cal Broncos. With just an email list on Yahoo! and lots of enthusiasm, the Early Bronco Brotherhood of Southern California soon had hundreds of members and a big appetite for hitting the trails. Before long, talk began of holding a "big" event, over a long weekend in Big Bear. The Big Bear Bronco Bash was initially intended as a way to get the wives and girlfriends—the whole family—to come with us on our Bronco outings. Our normal trips to the desert, sleeping in tents and doing our business behind bushes, are just a tad too "rough" for some of the fairer among us. Big Bear would allow us to stay in comfortable cabins with all the amenities of home, and a hot shower and soft bed after a day on the trail.
The first Big Bear Bronco Bash was held June 21-23, 2002. We rented a huge 21-person cabin and most of the attendees crammed into the "Bash Pad." We had 30 Early Broncos that year, but the following year we knew we needed to expand somewhat. After careful research, we decided to anchor the event at Golden Bear Cottages, which provides multiple cabin choices for families and groups of all sizes, plus many recreation and liesure activities. The second BBBB attracted 40 The Big Bear Bronco Bash is technically not even an organized run. We set certain times at which we'll meet to run some trails together. Other than that, you take care of all of your own accommodations. You may choose to stay with the group at Golden Bear or at any other location around the lake. Even the meals are "run what you brung", the highlight being the Mexican Potluck on Friday night. Of course, the main attractions of the Big Bear Bronco Bash are the trails, and the opportunity to run them with your Early Bronco Brothers. The trails around Big Bear range from scenic to somewhat difficult, although hard-core challenges are few. Most pass through historic mining or ranching areas and climb to lofty heights with gorgeous views of the valleys below. There are plenty of rocks to provide challenges, some water crossings, many different climate zones and varying vegetation. A Run List will be developed describing each of the trails and their difficulty ratings that are included in each run. You will choose your run for each day, get your name on the signup list, then show up at the prescribed staging area at the alotted time.
The Big Bear Bronco Bash is open to anyone who would like to attend, regardless of the make of your rig. If you would like to attend, there is no registration form or fee. We do ask, however that you make your intentions known by placing your information on the Signup Sheet in the Database section of the So Cal Broncos website on Yahoo! Groups. If you are not a member of So Cal Broncos (its free, just get a Yahoo! ID and sign up) and don't want to become one, you can email your information to Dusty Sharp at dtsharp@earthlink.net and I will get your info onto the sheet for you. Please include your name, rig info, arrival and departure dates, cabin number if staying at Golden Bear, and your run choices for each day.
